In 1895 the Long Lee Enfield was introduced. the juxtaposition of khaki clothing with the full dress clearly establishes the maxim "Scarlet into Khaki". These photos are all dated 1900 but they show that there was a wide choice of uniform. They were coloured photographs by a firm called Gregory and Company in 1902. These photographs were illustrations in a book of the South African War 1899-1902. Between 1888 and 1892, the Infantry were armed with the 1874 Martini Henry followed by the Mark I or Mark II Lee-Metford. Orders issued in the period prior to the introduction of service dress in 1902 give four orders of dress: review order, marching order, drill order and mess order.
